Pedal to the Metal: Transforming Bicycle Production Through Automation
/0 Comments/in Uncategorized /by Emily Laver
Earlier this year, Brompton Bikes, ABB, East Kent Colleges Group (EKC Group), and HSSMI wrapped up a groundbreaking project exploring how robotics and automation can revolutionise the production of Brompton’s world-famous folding bicycles.
The project tackled major challenges such as replicating Brompton’s unique hand-brazed frame design with robots, modernising paint plant operations, and addressing the UK-wide shortage of automation skills. A new “robotic sandpit” was created to test solutions, while EKC Group updated its curriculum to train the next generation of robotics and automation specialists.
Key outcomes included:
-
-
Robotic solutions for frame brazing and coating processes
-
Advanced 3D factory scans and simulation models for future planning
-
An augmented reality app to support operator training and maintenance
-
New digital-focused courses, giving students hands-on experience with real-world industry challenges
-
With Brompton’s new Ashford factory on the horizon, these innovations will help scale production, boost sustainability, and secure the company’s competitive edge in the global market.
