CLiCCC Secures Net Zero Finalist Place at South West 2022 Infrastructure Awards

HSSMI is pleased to announce that its circular economy project to advance the UK production of battery grade lithium has been shortlisted for a Net Zero award at the Constructing Excellence South West (CESW) 2022 Awards.
Co-production of Lithium and China Clay in Cornwall (CLiCCC) is a collaborative project led by Cornish Lithium, in partnership with Imerys Minerals and HSSMI. The mineral extraction project looks at decarbonising lithium mining using circular practices and establishing closed loop value chains for by-products from wastes produced from both current and historic kaolin mining operations.
CLiCCC has secured a finalist place at this year’s awards in the Net Zero category which recognises achievements to bring forward projects using technology advances, innovative process, by-products to enable responsible production from waste streams and sustainable actions that decarbonise and achieve net zero. The CLiCCC project, in particular, has been recognised for its environmental and social assessment.
The judges have commented on several aspects of the CLiCCC project, which have contributed to its recognition and the nomination. The project supports market development by upscaling the production of by-products using mineral waste through licensed agreements with secondary aggregate partners. CLiCCC will culminate in the construction of a first-of-its-kind £5.5m demonstrator plant in Trelavour, Cornwall, which will be based on a regenerative modular design with sustainability at its core. The CLiCCC project also fosters links between the mineral extraction sector and other industries such as rail, nuclear, agriculture, built environment, and marine conservation, which will be able to take up the secondary products created in kaolin mining operations.
Attracting more than 200 entries from some of the biggest firms in UK infrastructure, the Constructing Excellence South West (CESW) awards celebrate best practice in the South West England region in infrastructure and built environments and are one of the most coveted badges of excellence amongst built technologies peers across the wider UK.
The winners will be announced at a high-profile gala dinner and awards ceremony on Thursday 8 September 2022. More than five hundred built environment peers, sustainability leaders and circular economy innovators from across the sector will gather at The Marriott City Centre Hotel in Bristol to celebrate best practice, outstanding efforts and innovative decarbonising solutions applied across UK industry. The winners of the regional awards will go on to represent the South West as a finalist at the Constructing Excellence national awards which will take place later in the year at the Marriott Hotel in Grosvenor Square, London.
Pat Forward, Head of Project Development at Cornish Lithium said, “Years of work and planning have gone into making this mineral exploration project a reality and I’m delighted that our collaborative efforts to responsibly produce raw materials for the green revolution have been nominated for a top sustainability award. What’s most rewarding is that all our hard work has been recognised by an expert panel of independent judges. These are our fellow peers – the engineers, plant designers, environmental experts and technologists from across UK infrastructure and construction.”
Savina Venkova, Circular Economy Manager at HSSMI commented, “I certainly will have my fingers crossed for everyone who has been involved in our CLiCCC project when the award winners are announced in September. Our finalist position is a testament to the incredible efforts of a team of people that have championed a circular economy foundation for the UK’s EV and battery industry.”
Ashley Shopland, Director at Imerys Minerals Limited, said, “The minerals extraction industry is committed to an industry-wide plan to reach net zero CO2 emissions including carbon-neutral growth and we’re delighted the CLiCCC project has been recognised for its partnership work in developing innovative decarbonisation solutions to global environmental and social challenges. I am pleased that the team’s good work and professionalism across the full scope of this developing supply chain has been acknowledged by regional stakeholders.”
The full list of regional finalists that will line-up at the dazzling awards ceremony at The Marriott City Centre Hotel in Bristol on 8 September 2022 is available on the Constructing Excellence website.
