Meet The Expert | Margaret Beever
/0 Comments/in Uncategorized /by Emily Laver
Sustainability in manufacturing isn’t just about doing less harm — it’s about designing production and end-of-life strategies that work economically as well as environmentally. Margaret Beever, HSSMI’s Technical Specialist in Circular Economy, has spent her career doing exactly that.
Margaret has extensive experience implementing sustainability and environmental management into manufacturing. She worked for over a decade at Ford Motor Company, across manufacturing, facilities engineering, new vehicle and powertrain launch, lean manufacturing (as a Six Sigma Black Belt), and environmental engineering.
From Ford to the Frontline of Circular Economy Research
At HSSMI, Margaret has led and delivered on many commercial and research manufacturing projects, focused on sustainable production and end-of-life. Her work spans everything from battery recycling facility studies to Circular Economy Maturity Assessments for major OEMs — bringing her deep manufacturing background to bear on some of the industry’s most pressing sustainability challenges.
A Track Record Across Battery, Automotive and Hydrogen Sustainability
Margaret’s project experience covers a wide range of sustainability and circular economy challenges:
-
- Automotive OEM — Battery Recycling, UK. Margaret delivered technical input into a study on the key considerations an OEM needs to make when exploring a major battery recycling facility, covering process and equipment selection, layout planning, battery handling and storage practices, legislation considerations, and overall economic viability.
-
- UK Cell Manufacturer — Non-Conforming Cells Strategy. Margaret was part of a team developing the optimal solution for non-conforming cells produced as waste from a 45 GWh gigafactory, modelling waste production volumes, engaging with waste suppliers, and carrying out a techno-economic analysis of available options.
-
- Electric Truck OEM — Circular Economy Maturity Assessment (CEMA). Margaret delivered an in-depth assessment of the OEM’s Circular Economy status using HSSMI’s bespoke CEMA tool, working with the senior executive team through several day-long workshops to shape a detailed 5-year CE plan.
-
- LEVC / Geely — Waste Optimisation. Margaret delivered a technical assessment of production facility waste streams and management for an electric vehicle OEM, identifying opportunities for waste elimination and reduction and significant cost savings to support the new vehicle launch.
-
- Hydrogen Technology Research Projects — LCA & End of Life. Margaret delivered technical work evaluating the environmental impacts of hydrogen storage and high-pressure PEM electrolysers through Life Cycle Analysis and End of Life solutions.
-
- Solid State Battery Research Project — LCA & End of Life. Margaret provided technical support delivering LCA and EoL analysis and white paper reports on a new solid-state battery product, evaluating its complete life cycle in comparison to conventional lithium-ion batteries.
A Chartered Specialist in Sustainable Manufacturing
Margaret holds an MEng in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing & Management, an MSc in Environmental Management, and is a Chartered Engineer with IMechE. Her core skills — sustainability assessment and improvement, Life Cycle Analysis for battery and hydrogen systems, End-of-Life legislation, and waste management and reduction — make her one of the industry’s most credible voices on turning sustainability ambition into practical manufacturing strategy.
Why It Matters
As regulation and customer expectations push manufacturers toward genuine circularity, the winners will be the ones who treat sustainability as a design principle, not an afterthought. Margaret’s expertise is helping HSSMI’s clients navigate that shift — from battery recycling to end-of-life strategy — with rigour and credibility.
