Providing specialist battery logistics and automation expertise for multiple battery manufacturing facilities.
WHO WAS THE CUSTOMER & WHAT IS THEIR BACKGROUND?
Agratas is a newly established subsidiary of the Tata Group, focused on designing, developing and manufacturing high-quality, high-performance sustainable batteries for the mobility and energy sectors. With anchor customers including Tata Motors and JLR, Agratas is developing multiple battery manufacturing facilities to support future growth and demand.
WHAT WAS THE BRIEF & WHY WERE HSSMI BROUGHT IN?
Agratas required significant investment in advanced logistics automation technologies, including Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (ASRS), Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) and Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs).
As part of a major greenfield gigafactory programme, Agratas needed to identify the most suitable automation partners while ensuring solutions could integrate effectively with future operations, digital systems, facility infrastructure and wider manufacturing processes.
HSSMI was engaged to provide specialist expertise in battery manufacturing logistics and automation systems, alongside additional project capability, helping Agratas make informed decisions, reduce programme risk and maintain delivery momentum throughout a critical phase of the programme.
WHY HSSMI?
Agratas engaged HSSMI to provide specialist logistics automation expertise and additional project capability during the development of multiple battery manufacturing facilities.
Drawing on extensive experience in battery manufacturing logistics, ASRS technologies and AGV/AMR systems, HSSMI led the technical assessment and recommendation activities for key logistics automation work packages. This provided Agratas with the specialist expertise required to make informed supplier decisions, reduce programme risk and maintain delivery momentum.
Following supplier selection, HSSMI supported supplier mobilisation and early implementation activities, working alongside Agratas and key stakeholders to help align logistics operations, automation systems, digital requirements and facility design considerations. This ensured logistics automation solutions were not only technically capable, but also integrated effectively within the wider manufacturing programme.
By combining technical leadership with practical delivery support, HSSMI helped Agratas progress confidently from supplier selection into implementation planning without the need to build additional internal capability.
OUTCOME & IMPACT
HSSMI played a key role in helping Agratas progress its logistics automation programme from supplier selection through to implementation planning.
• Technical leadership during the assessment and recommendation of ASRS and AGV suppliers for critical logistics automation work packages.
• Reduced programme risk through informed decision-making and specialist battery logistics expertise.
• Access to additional capability and capacity without the need to recruit specialist internal resources.
• Effective alignment between logistics operations, automation systems, digital platforms and facility requirements.
• Support for supplier mobilisation, process development, layout reviews and implementation planning activities.
• A strong foundation for detailed engineering, manufacture and delivery of selected logistics automation solutions.
Through a combination of technical leadership and collaborative delivery support, HSSMI helped Agratas move confidently from supplier selection into implementation, maintaining momentum across a complex greenfield battery manufacturing programme.
TESTIMONIAL FROM AGRATAS
HSSMI’s Team’s High-Impact Delivery and Automation Expertise Drive Project Success.
Over the 12 months that Wulston worked with the Agratas team, he consistently delivered high-value outcomes through his strong technical capability and extensive experience across multiple projects and industries. In the first phase of our engagement, Wulston’s leadership in vendor selection was instrumental in identifying and appointing the most capable suppliers for critical AGV and ASRS equipment packages, significantly de-risking the project and setting a strong foundation for successful delivery.
During the second phase, Wulston’s expertise enabled Agratas to effectively plan and integrate automated logistics systems into our new greenfield facility. Through his work on aligning business processes, Wulston supported the detailed mapping of end-to-end logistics processes and ensured these were clearly linked to the functional capabilities required within our WMS and MES systems. He also ensured alignment between the automation design, operational logistics, building and construction requirements, and interfaces with other equipment and systems. This holistic approach ensured the solutions were not only technically robust, but also operationally effective and fit for purpose, supporting a smooth transition from design into delivery. Wulston consistently anticipated stakeholder needs, proactively resolving information gaps and maintaining momentum across the programme.
In addition to his technical impact, Wulston built strong, collaborative relationships with the wider team and with both internal and external stakeholders, contributing to effective decision-making and overall project success. We thank Wulston for his significant contribution to the programme and would welcome the opportunity to work with him again in the future.
