Meet The Expert | Wulston Alderman

At HSSMI, our strength lies in the depth of experience we bring to our projects, and this includes Wulston Alderman, our Technical Specialist in Logistics Engineering.
Wulston is a seasoned Logistics Engineering practitioner, working with organisations to deliver solutions for greenfield, start-up and transformation projects. He works well in ambiguity, bringing a structured, evidence-based approach and applying the principles and lessons of previous experience to progress projects towards the required outcome.
His work is principally across manufacturing logistics and logistics automation, and more recently within the battery manufacturing sector.
A Career Built on Global Delivery
Wulston’s Logistics Engineering experience has been built through a career in automotive and advanced manufacturing, combining operational experience with the design and delivery of new manufacturing and logistics facilities in the UK and internationally.
At Itatiaia, Brazil, he was part of the initial project team establishing JLR’s greenfield SKD manufacturing facility, developing Logistics Engineering requirements and supporting the project through to plant launch. At Nitra, Slovakia, his Logistics Engineering responsibilities included construction, fixed equipment and input through the Design & Build and permitting phases.
His subsequent work at JLR’s Battery Assembly Centre provided an important bridge into electrification, where he led the fixed-equipment elements of Plant Logistics for the new PHEV battery assembly facility, including the installation and commissioning of automated storage and material-handling systems.
These experiences have given Wulston a practitioner perspective across the project lifecycle, from early planning and design through to physical implementation, testing and operational handover.
He has subsequently applied this experience within multidisciplinary engineering and EPCM projects, providing Logistics Engineering input from early feasibility and FEED through design review and implementation.
From Automotive to Battery Manufacturing
Building on his automotive experience, Wulston has increasingly applied his Logistics Engineering capability within battery manufacturing.
As Head of Logistics at Britishvolt, he developed logistics planning for the proposed UK Gigafactory and scale-up facility. Subsequent work broadened his experience into upstream battery materials, including Cathode Active Material and Anode manufacturing.
Since joining HSSMI, this experience has continued through projects including the Agratas Gigafactory programme, where his Logistics Automation role included developing technical requirements, leading technical evaluations and supporting supplier selection, mobilisation and the transition into detailed design for ASRS, AGV and AMR systems.
His work with HSSMI has also included Logistics Engineering feasibility studies for new Module & Pack manufacturing facilities, extending his experience across cell, module and pack manufacturing, complemented by upstream battery materials and automated logistics systems.
A Structured, Evidence-based Approach
Wulston is comfortable working on projects where all the answers are not yet known. He starts with the information available, identifies and tests the assumptions being made, and considers the consequences if those assumptions prove incorrect or subsequently change.
He then structures the work needed to progress the project, while remaining conscious of dependencies and interfaces outside his direct area of responsibility that may affect the Logistics Engineering outcome. This allows previous experience to provide principles and lessons rather than predetermined solutions.
Wulston is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (FCILT), reflecting his longstanding commitment to Logistics Engineering and the wider logistics profession.
