A Day in the Life of an Engineer

To mark International Women and Girl’s in Science day, Nahema Sylla, a virtual engineer here takes us through a day in her life.
It is 9am. I am sitting comfortably at my desk, catching up on my emails and doing a little bit of research about new industrial trends and innovations, while having a nice cup of tea. I really enjoy these calm moments when I can brainstorm new ideas to improve manufacturing processes. But these never last…
I am an engineer, working on innovative projects, with a background in robotics. I specialise in assistive devices that help workers on production lines to perform painful tasks, improve the ergonomics of their workstations, and prevent the risk of Musculo- Skeletal disorders. Basically, my main mission is to ensure workers’ comfort, health and safety, by helping them with innovative robotic devices, such as Collaborative robots, or even exoskeletons. Due to their interaction with humans, we need to be very careful when implementing them, to ensure that operators are safe working around these robots.
My work involves various skills and tasks. When I’m not busy writing hundreds of lines of code to perform simulations of human-robot collaboration, I’m brainstorming with my team on how to implement innovative technologies in industry, or preparing my speech for the next conference in robotics, or even writing proposals in collaboration with external partners to apply for funding.
So, as you can imagine, it is difficult to describe any particular day in my life as an engineer. Being a person who is driven by challenges, I learn a lot every day and I think that’s what makes this job so exciting.
