Delivering Scale Up Success for the HVS Hydrogen Powered HGV
/0 Comments/in Uncategorized /by Emily Laver
Supporting HVS on their AP (Attribute Prototype) vehicle builds, bringing them closer to series production of their hydrogen fuel cell powered Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV).
WHO WAS THE CUSTOMER & WHAT IS THEIR BACKGROUND?
Hydrogen Vehicle Systems (HVS) is an innovative start up founded in 2017, focusing on the development of hydrogen powered heavy goods vehicles for the global transport & logistics market. Headquartered in Glasgow and operating in Warwickshire, the company has developed leading fuel cell powertrain technology to power their cutting-edge HGV platform, to drive the decarbonisation of future transport.
WHAT WAS THE BRIEF & WHY WERE HSSMI BROUGHT IN?
HVS’s leading fuel cell HGV’s have received significant industry acclaim and customer interest, leading to a future vehicle demand that will require a robust & comprehensive manufacturing engineering & scale up plan. HSSMI were engaged by HVS in 2023 to develop the Manufacturing Engineering & Scale up planning to support the long-term production of HVS products.
This included an engineering plan to deliver early-stage prototype builds, alongside strategic feasibility assessments of volume production facilities, for long term vehicle manufacturing at scale.
Additionally, HSSMI has supported the feasibility assessments of high-volume manufacturing locations, to ensure the long-term sustainability of operations at higher volumes. This included facility, manufacturing & logistics process feasibility for specific site locations under consideration.
WHAT DID HSSMI DO TO DELIVER THE RESULTS?
Working closely with HVS product development teams HSSMI engaged in a simultaneous engineering exercise to formulate early-stage manufacturing process development. This required a flexible approach, to translate the product design change into a realistic, early- stage manufacturing process strategy.
This simultaneous engineering activity ultimately facilitated the initial prototype vehicle builds at Silverstone in 2024. HSSMI played a leading role in the execution of the prototype builds with regards to onsite layout, equipment, process, logistics & build management.
Using HSSMI’s extensive knowledge and experience in automotive & HGV manufacturing, we were able to specify the suitability of production & logistics operations & constraints within new volume production sites under consideration. This support enabled HVS to make data-driven decisions about long-term planning effectiveness.
WHAT WERE THE FINAL OUTPUTS & WHAT IMPACT HAS THIS MADE?
Having been largely facilitated by the HSSMI team, the initial prototype builds were successfully completed in Q2 2024. This has allowed learning for future phases of launch from both a product and process perspective which can be incorporated moving forward. The vehicles produced can now be further utilised for homologation, testing & validation trials moving forward.
Our support on long term site feasibility, has helped HVS to narrow down suitable sites and identify works required to ensure any chosen site is suitable for HVS’s long term requirements.
