Meet The Expert | John Victory
John Victory, C.Eng. MIET, MSOE, HSSMI’s Technical Specialist for M&E, has spent over 40 years in the manufacturing of automotive powertrains as an electrical and controls engineer — experience that now underpins some of HSSMI’s most technically demanding electrical projects.
John’s career began at Ford Motor Co. Powertrain Operations in the UK in 1966, running through to 2003. He was initially responsible for the installation of electrical services in UK plants, including power, lighting and ancillary services. His responsibilities later extended to European plants, covering electrical services and the standardisation of machine control systems to ensure commonality between a variety of machine and equipment builders — supporting ease of operation and maintenance. He was latterly appointed Controls Leader for all Global Powertrain Operations, driving standardisation of control systems worldwide.
From Retirement to Renewed Purpose
Following retirement from Ford, John worked with Bradford University organising short courses on engine management and calibration, and mentored KTP (Knowledge Transfer Partnership) candidates throughout their two-year assignments. He also organised the biannual international conference “Power Train Modelling and Control” — a testament to his standing in the field.
A Portfolio Spanning Tractors, Electric Motors and Aero Engines
At HSSMI, John’s project experience continues to draw on his deep electrical engineering background:

- CNH (Fiat) — Basildon Tractor Factory — Process Improvement of Tractor Assembly Systems. John led the design, development and implementation of process instructions for the assembly of tractors, utilising Siemens CAD systems and internal CNH standards.
- EPRIME (Ford) — Repurposing of Engine Machining and Assembly for Production of Electric Motors. John surveyed existing machinery and equipment within the current engine production lines at Dagenham Engine Plant, establishing power and other service requirements that would enable retooled machines and equipment to produce components for electric motors.
- British Volt — Waste Management. John developed the questionnaire for suppliers tendering for the collection and processing of waste from EV battery production.
- ZeroAvia — Defining High Voltage Requirements for Aero Engine Testing Facility. John assessed the needs and requirements for handling the production of high voltage from the testing of aero engines, proposing the necessary configuration of equipment, services and connections for the safe distribution of 20MW of output power.
- Project Reviews of HSSMI Bids, Proposals and Contracts. John has reviewed, edited and advised colleagues on a range of projects, including Kent Schools’ technical training facilities and Faradion’s utility requirements for a manufacturing facility.
- Morris Commercial. John carried out a survey of an existing ex aircraft hanger to assess the availability of electrical and mechanical services for a new manufacturing project. Following the survey and consultations with the client, John created an estimate for the necessary facilities required to enable the production of a new vehicle at the site. The estimate included costs for all electrical and mechanical services required.
A Chartered Engineer with Deep Technical Credentials
John holds an HNC in Electrical & Electronic Engineering, a BEng in Manufacturing Engineering, an MSc in Engineering Quality Improvement, and a PhD in Model Based Condition Monitoring with Web Access. His core skills — electrical engineering, machine control systems, facility installation, condition monitoring, standardisation and project management — reflect a career built on rigour and technical depth.
