With a proven track record of successful planning, implementation and delivery of manufacturing solutions for a variety of battery-related industries and applications, Kumaravel has built a reputation as a renowned battery manufacturing engineering specialist, with experience spanning cell production, module and pack manufacturing, and automated systems across various gigafactory and electrification projects.

 

From Korea’s Semyung to HSSMI’s Global Battery Projects

Prior to joining HSSMI, Kumaravel held several roles at Semyung, a Korean-based company, leading plant engineering, process equipment and facility definition to set up a production facility for lithium-ion cell, module and pack assembly lines for Electric Vehicle, Energy Storage System and industrial applications. He now regularly works with both SMEs and OEMs to provide solutions in the battery space to scale up, design facilities, and optimise production processes.

 

A Global Portfolio of Gigafactory and Due Diligence Work

Kumaravel’s project experience spans some of the industry’s most significant battery manufacturing programmes:

    • U.S Automotive OEM — Gigafactory Study, Battery Cell Phase 1, UK & US. Kumaravel provided technical delivery of a 45 GWh facility benchmarking study, defining the key elements of the battery manufacturing facility and highlighting primary areas for optimisation and cost savings through innovative equipment solutions.
    • Technical Due Diligence Projects — European pCAM/CAM & Cell Manufacturing Facilities, Asian Gigafactory and Battery module/pack manufacturing & ZeroAvia, US. Kumaravel delivered technical due diligence for planned GWh facilities in Europe producing pCAM, CAM. battery cells and battery module/pack across Europe and Asia, as well as for a hydrogen-fuelled electric powertrain manufacturing facility in the US, assessing process, equipment, layout, throughput, yield and OEE targets, ramp-ups, and existing red flag and risk registers.
    • U.S & UK Automotive OEM and Technology Developers – New Battery Chemistry Cell & Battery Pack Scale up Feasibility studies. Kumaravel delivered feasibility studies for establishing scale up facilities from pilot to 10 GWh capacity in the US and in the UK to produce cells and battery packs using emerging battery technologies including Solid State, Sodium Ion and Zinc Bromide targeting EV and Long duration energy storage systems.
    • UK Automotive OEM — Battery Recycling Facility Study & Module and Pack Production Facility Benchmarking. Kumaravel delivered a facility study on key considerations for establishing a major battery recycling facility supporting JLR’s decision-making around process and equipment selection, layout planning, and economic viability, alongside a CAPEX and OPEX benchmarking study comparing JLR’s manufacturing capabilities against other OEMs in the market.
    • UK Cell Manufacturer — LiBAR (Lithium-Ion Battery Assembly and Remanufacturing). Kumaravel delivered technical work assessing the manufacturing and economic requirements of a Lithium-Ion Battery Assembly and Remanufacturing facility, exploring automation opportunities in the remanufacturing process, defining suitable initial production volumes, and exploring possible UK locations for the proposed facility.

Kumaravel holds a BEng in Electronics & Communication and a Diploma in Electrical & Electronics Engineering. His core skills — process definition, equipment definition, facility definition, test strategies, quality definition, stakeholder engagement, team leadership and project management — reflect two decades of experience translating ambitious battery manufacturing concepts into deliverable facilities.
